Electrolysis

Permanent Hair Reduction Using Electrolysis

Looking for a long-term hair removal solution, minus the discomfort of waxing, the harsh chemicals of bleaching or the mess of creams? Then electrolysis should be your go-to treatment!

Electrolysis hair removal (also known as electro epilation) has been a tried and tested method for safely tackling unwanted hair on the body and face for decades. But in recent years it’s really raised its game, using advanced technology to make the process even more effective at producing permanent results. Plus it’s extremely versatile, so can be used as an alternative to laser treatment on ultra-fine, white, grey or blonde hair. It’s this proven track record for delivering long-term, hair-free results that makes electrolysis such a popular treatment in our SkinSpaceUK clinics.

Electrolysis essentially works by disrupting the hair growth, using a process where a tiny probe (similar to a very fine needle) is carefully inserted into the hair follicle and a momentary amount of heat is applied.  The procedure damages your hair follicle to prevent growth and causes existing hairs to fall out. Thankfully, the electrolysis probe doesn’t pierce your skin and you won’t feel it enter your hair follicle, giving the treatment a low ouch-factor.

SkinSpaceUKs Electrolysis Treatment – How Does it Work?

Prior to your treatment, the SkinSpaceUK specialist will access your suitability for electrolysis. Please note that electrolysis can be a time consuming process so larger treatment areas may be better suited to laser treatment, and hair with a tight curl can create difficulty in effectively probing the follicle.

Once your treatment has been given the green light, you can lay back as your SkinSpaceUK specialist uses a micro probe to treat each individual hair follicle. This burst of energy prevents nutrients feeding the hair and the hair becomes weaker and finer.

Our SkinSpaceUK team are highly trained in electrolysis, ensuring that the procedure is as quick and comfortable as possible. How long will your session take? That very much depends on the size of the treatment area, the amount of hair you have to start with and your hair growth cycle but a typical session will last between 15 – 60 minutes from start to finish.

    TREATMENT FAQs

    Electrolysis

    Does it Hurt?

Most clients only experience a gentle warming sensation in the area being treated. Some report a minor snapping sensation during the treatment.

    How Many Treatments Are Needed?

Electrolysis is a progressive and gradual process. As the hairs become finer, the treatments can be spaced further apart.

If you are new to using electrolysis, your treatments should be approximately 7 to 14 days apart for the first three to four months.

After this period you will notice a reduction in the amount of hair regrowth, so treatments can then be spaced out every three to four weeks.

What Are the Possible Side Effects and Risks?

While cosmetic medicine is not without complications or unwanted side effects, we do take every precaution to minimise and limit any complications to offer a safe and comfortable service. Reported side effects include but are not limited to the following: spot breakout, discomfort, burning, bruising, swelling, pigmentation, scarring, infection, blistering, temporary or permanent skin changes. Individual results can vary and are not guaranteed.
Please note that depending on your skin’s sensitivity to heat, the treatment area may be red or a little puffy, which usually passes within a few hours.

How Can I Prepare for the Treatment?

If you usually pluck, thread or wax the hairs, we recommend that you stop doing this and cut any growth with scissors or razor to allow some hair to form in the follicle, ready for your electrolysis treatment. It’s therefore ideal to book your appointment as soon as you notice new hairs growing through, before the hair becomes too long.

At least two weeks before and after your appointment please discontinue using hair removal creams, fake tan, bleaching products, strong emollients, aromatherapy oils and perfumes in the treatment areas. During this time we recommended avoiding the sun and throughout your treatment course we highly recommend using an SPF30+ sunscreen.

For seven days prior and after your appointment, please discontinue any skin irritants (Retin-A, Retinols, Glycolic and Salicylic acids)

Before every treatment, please advise us of medical conditions and medications that you are taking, including antibiotics or steroids. Certain drugs and herbal medications (e.g. St John's Wort) can make your skin photosensitive and increase the risk of unwanted side effects. If you have a history of cold sores, antiviral medication may be used prior to treatment and continued for one week after.

    What Does the Aftercare Involve?

For 24 hours following your treatment, please avoid hot water, cleansing products, make up and perfumed products in the area.
If you notice small spots appear in the treatment area, we recommend applying some antiseptic cream. Do not pick or rub with flannels or towels while the area is healing.
To minimise any discomfort following treatment, witch hazel or aloe vera can be applied to the treated areas.
